The proposed project will address a clear and pressing need identified at the Buyer’s farm – fighting weed pressure when growing vegetables in in-ground greenhouses. Current methods of weeding in such conditions include one or a combination of the following approaches – application of herbicides, mechanical weeding, soil sterilization or manual weeding. All these methods though have multiple and serious drawbacks (environmental damage, high costs, unpredictability of supply, etc.).

A Bulgarian agri-tech start-up founded with a clear mission in mind – help farmers successfully tackle weeds with a cost-effective, scalable alternative to human labour, pesticides and machine tilling.
The company’s main innovation is fully autonomous weeding robot, based on a light-weighted 4-wheeled platform which can self-navigate in the fields. It uses image-recognition AI based to spot the weeds among desired plants and then applies a focused light beam to effectively destroy weeds.
Solution
The pilot introduces a highly innovative solution for removing weeds in in-ground greenhouses. It is based on a compact (1m x 1m x 1m dimensions), fully autonomous, lightweight (<100kg), 100% electric battery-powered, 4-wheeled robotic rover.
It uses a revolutionary weeding method, a focused energy beam, which destroys weeds effectively, is fully in line with organic farming regulations, with no harm to surrounding crop plants or living organisms, and crucially no fire hazard created. The robot targeting system based on trained AI computer vision algorithms provides extremely high precision and consistence, even compared with manual weeding. The robot’s advanced navigation capabilities and large-capacity battery packs allow for unsupervised work for days on end.
The proposed pilot solution will upgrade a base platform already developed by the EIC Awardee under the EIC Accelerator project with additional functionalities making it much-better adapted to the greenhouse farming specifics.
